Athens is a very safe city, but there is no question that over the next few months, the Greeks, who have a long history of rallying, striking and peacefully demonstrating, will probably be experiencing some growing pains as they adjust to the new austerity measures undertaken by the government to reduce the public debt.  As a result, some of the more popular commerical areas may be a bit too exciting for travelers.  This just highlights the advantage of staying in a furnished vacation rental.  Demonstrations generally don’t take place in residential areas of the downtown Athens.

Want to fall in love with Athens like I did? Don’t just drop in for the night, pay homage to the Parthenon and head off to the islands. Allow yourself at least 4 nights, though you won’t be bored if you stay a month. Live like a local in one of our furnished vacation rentals by owner in the vibrant downtown neighborhood of Pagrati or charming, historical Thisseo, both great bases for exploring both the historical sites of this at once historical and cosmopolitan metropolis.
